Monday Meetup Event “Sync Licensing 101” - Reserve your spot
The Recording Academy’s biggest night of the year is tonight with the GRAMMY Awards ceremony airing live at 8pm ET on CBS. Print out your nominees list and pick your winners.
While I’m a proud Recording Academy member, I find myself watching the ceremonies from my living room couch tonight. I set up a chat thread for you to join me in lively debate over winners, snubs, performances, and Trevor Noah’s jokes. It’s more fun than talking to the TV.
Will someone get slapped? Have a wardrobe malfunction? Drop an F-bomb on national TV? You gotta watch to find out.
** Red carpet fans: watch live coverage, interviews, and fashion takes on Youtube starting at 6pm ET. Click here.
I’m rooting for Carla Patullo’s album So She Howls in the Best New Age, Ambient, or Chant Album category. Listen to my interview with Carla about the album and her successful career in film scoring and sync publishing.
Last year, Cheryl B. Engelhardt was nominated in the same category for her album The Passenger, the first album written and recorded on a cross-country TRAIN! Listen to my interview with Cheryl here.
Women dominated in the top categories for the first time EVER (it only took 66 years); let’s see how many will actually go home with a gold gramophone.
Kicking Off Black History Month
Another reason why I love the GRAMMYS, is discovering artists who are new… to me. With Black History Month (BHM) now in full swing, I’m highlighting these two nominees who wow me.
Nominee: Lakecia Benjamin, jazz saxophonist, for her album Phoenix. Categories: Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Best Jazz Performance ("Basquiat"), and Best Instrumental Composition ("Amerikkan Skin"). Only one other woman, Terri Lyne Carrington has received the Best Jazz Instrumental Album award. Let’s make it TWO women!
Nominee: Coco Jones, musician/songwriter. Categories: Best New Artist, Best R&B Album, Best R&B Performance, Best Traditional R&B Performance, and Best R&B Song. Yes, that’s FIVE categories thanks to her breakthrough album Why Didn’t I Tell You. Four out of the five Best R&B Album and Best R&B Song nominees are women this year. Coco says the Best New Artist category means the most to her since that is cross-genre and highly competitive given the total number of candidates.
If she looks familiar, it’s because Coco has been on TV and the big screen since she was 12 years old. Including the new reboot of Fresh Prince called Bel-Air on Peacock.
