Some wonderful songs in that playlist. Also some harrowing backstories. Even as the Runaways were breaking through as the first all-female hard-rock band to get real traction, they were being abused. The over-the-top sexualization of a teenaged Cherie Currie, and Jacky Fox's assault at the hands of the group's manager, are just two of the more egregious items. I wish Leslie Gore were better known. "You Don't Own Me" is, in my book, the most powerful anthem on that list (at least of the songs I know); Gore lived out her life in a gay partnership, one of the first music stars to do so openly. Joan Jett and her manager Kenny Laguna had to start their own label to release "Bad Reputation" after being turned down by every single existing label in the U.S. Oh, so many stories!
