What an awesome tale of that concert with your dad, gave me chills. So sad to hear about Jennifer Finch and even more disconcerting (although not surprising) to hear about the lack of healthcare coverage that musicians are dealing with.
U.S. healthcare costs are criminal. Imagine artists trying to get by who don’t have a large audience to help financially. I’m so happy Jennifer’s fundraiser met its goal.
I struggle to imagine what it would be like to live without access to healthcare. Terrifying. It’s a shame there’s not some way that musicians could all band together into some sort of union and somehow create a big group health policy that would allow for reasonable premiums.
There are unions that offer plans but so many artists still cannot afford the premiums or the deductibles. But the providers say a huge challenge is getting the word out that the plans exist. Maybe a nonprofit like MusiCares could offer to help with monthly premiums to make it more feasible? Maybe I’ll suggest that to the Recording Academy….
