Going after the tech establishment and addiction may be bigger than going after institutional religion in today’s world. “Like A Prayer” the boot camp, tech the war. My habits have already started shifting as more awareness and creative pushback have emerged in 2026.
BTW, for icons who opened up possibilities for women to sing about sex, Betty Davis is a key figure, but then so are many blues artists from the 30s. There's a great legacy of women pushing boundaries that Madonna both carries on and amplifies.
It is wild that only a few seconds of footage of Betty Davis exist. And they are silent. The flak she caught for daring to sing about sexuality and to funk harder than her contemporaries breaks my heart.

I think Danceteria may be my fave on the album so far, but my overall sense of it is Madonna paying homage to the era that formed her, the era she defined, and her own legacy. And when she is in the groove, she doesn't have to prove anything.

I prefer other genres of music, was never into the flash and why does she have so many names? I'm an Americana musician and radio jock - yes, we prefer acoustic. I will say I heard Rosie O'Donnell say recently of her friend, " She's evolving", ok - I usually agree with Rosie. I guess, Thea, I AM aware of a scrambly feeling in my gut about Madonna. I saw how Warren Beatty reacted to her during that movie/trist. He was uncomfortable, generally seemed disgusted with her behavior. She's too chameleon for me to get a knowing vibe. Too commercial. Well, I am looking forward to this new album. I'm mixed on the first three songs released but I'm hoping for a solid work from Miss M. Madonna has been in my life since the beginning, so anything she does is significant. I've not been a fan of anything she's done since 2009 so I can only hope that she returns to her dance/pop glory with this new release. Either way, she is a major artist whose music will live on well beyond her time here.

Thanks Thea. I've listened to the album twice now - and really like what I've heard! "One Step Away" is one of several that I think would work great on the dance floor. Actually, except for the last few songs, the whole album would work great out there! Of course, there will likely be several extended dance mixes of many of the songs which could make for great long evening at a club! So far I think my favorite is "Danceteria."

As a big Madge fan and someone who hopes to review the album (ideally publishing Monday or Tuesday but who knows), I’m definitely looking back at this a bunch to help form my argument! Whether i wind up liking or disliking the album or just being meh on it. And i was listening to “In This Life” yesterday and yeah, she really was the first pop icon to write music about the devastation of AIDS in such a personal way. I feel like that part of her legacy has gone overlooked a bit.
