When your late-night toxic bootie call means more than you’ll ever admit out loud, pull up this Nicole Atkins single for a sympathetic ear. Fans and media tie Atkins’s signature sound to Roy Orbison, an unexpected thrill for new listeners. Her voice resonated so deeply with me that I wept through my first Atkins show at SXSW 2011 (my tears are the ultimate compliment, btw). “When The Night Falls” illustrates her salient vocals and clandestine story lines. The upcoming album Drama releases September 18th.

Karina Rykman, New York
“Easy, Rider” single (psychedelic pop)
Herizon Music spotted this rising star back in 2019 when she played bass for Marco Benavento. Listen to her podcast interview. Karina Rykman is now trailblazing a psychedelic pop genre with her own band. The upcoming September 25th album Late Checkout was recorded at Trey Anastasio’s studio The Barn and LCD SoundSystem’s studio DFA. The combo says it all. Rykman’s pre-release single “Easy, Rider” takes us on a trip down the Northern California coast. The tune showcases her playful songwriting (co-writer Gabe Monro), bass, guitar, and vocal talents. One of Rykman’s most endearing qualities? She’s a total ham! But don’t underestimate her serious star qualities.

The Tiarras, Texas
“vida libre” single (techno tejano jam band)
Let it be known, I just coined this genre as well. This sister trio comprised of Tori, Tiffany, and Sophia Baltiarra played as teens for Herizon Music’s Christmas Fundraiser in 2020, and their magnetism radiated from the get go. We last wrote about them in 2023. Since then, they’ve played with different genres and covers while fine tuning their signature style. The new single “vida libre” combines their Latin roots with a wah-wah pedal and Michael Ramos’s Charanga Cakewalk (pioneer of electronic Tejano experimentation) influence.
Peace, love, and freedom is the message. The result is a modern Latin jam band vibe that this Deadhead relates to on a visceral level. I’m hoping Tori throws in one of her killer guitar solos for live performances. Grab your corona de flores headband, day glow bracelets, and Birkenstocks. It’s time to shake it, sugar.

Abigayle Oakley, Nevada
“Dandelion” single (folk, snow white)
The single “Dandelion” (not to be confused with Ella Langley’s album title) is from Oakley’s new EP This Side Of The Sun. Her music falls into the Snow White genre, which I just coined. Elvis the groundhog, two chipmunks, a robin, and a black squirrel ventured to my sunroom screen door while streaming her music. Kid you not.
The single is about perspective. Dandelions are either invading destructive weeds or the welcomed manifesters of wishes and dreams come true. Gotta love a good metaphor. The acoustic dual guitars (feat. Tom Davis) elevate Oakley’s voice, in which Joni Mitchell fans will find sweet familiarity. Looking for singer/songwriter Sunday morning musings? Margo Price, Tennessee
Days of Unrest album (outlaw country)
Calling all dissidents! The new face of Outlaw Country and civil disobedience is Margo Price. This country album flips the bird at a music scene that’s traded its humble small town roots for bro-country corporate formulas and polished optics. Kicking off with instrumental and mariachi tunes, Price then pays cover-song homage to rebel troubadours Joan Biaz, Woodie Guthrie, and Bob Dylan. She even throws in her “girl” version of the late anti-war conservative Charlie Daniel’s “Long Haired Country Boy.”
Price then circles it back to 2026 with the original “Oval Room.” Raised by a family who lost their farm and becoming the first female Farm Aid board member, this verse stands out:
At the factory
Never been so slow
Got a big fourth down
Ninety-nine to go
And down on the farm
Nothing growing there
Except the debts they owe
And their gray hair
