Interesting, and some great data to back it up. One additional important issue: The U.S. is the most self-consciously "woke" country in the world, yet women seem to be more siloed in the "interpret, don't write" box than in many other countries. Or, if they write they are still "singer-songwriters", and rarely play instruments or engage in stuff like mixing, mastering and production. The trope that "girls don't play guitar" is still taken as a given here, even though, according to representatives of Fender and Dean, girls now account for one third of all purchases of starter and mid-level guitars and amps. The Fender rep I spoke with even said that without girls the instrument industry would be insolvent. Yet we can only name maybe a half dozen female lead guitarists today who are considered top rank, at least in the U.S. In Europe and Asia, where political feminism plays little or no role in shaping artistic choices, there are dozens. It's a real paradox.

It is *wild* to read that even someone as established and legendary as Bonnie McKee still faces sexist assumptions in the industry. Great read, thanks for sharing! -max
