Since celebrating Herizon Music’s one-year Substack anniversary in September, our band of dreamers, rule breakers and rockstars has grown considerably.
We hit 1,114 subscribers as of writing this newsletter — an 11% increase since our anniversary date!
First, I’d like to thank you for reserving space and time in your life for learning about women in music and the issues that affect them. The “Post Election Blues” article and my “I Voted For” note were tied to politics and drove a lot of recent growth.
While this isn’t a political newsletter or podcast, sometimes social and political issues do affect women in a way that would be irresponsible to dismiss. I promise to do my best to provide thought-provoking, researched articles and interviews that inspire and celebrate women’s contributions to music. If you’d like to help keep the party going, please consider upgrading to a paid subscription. The annual subscription rate is 50% off for the holidays and comes with a gift! Scroll down to get details. 👇🏻
Now, let’s talk new music. All you musicians and songwriters have been busy pumping out tunes since the last New Music post in August. If you know of a female or female-fronted act (including you) releasing new music in any genre, send me the details. My goal is to publish another list before 2025. Tell us what you think of the new music in the comments!

A Good Thing, Odie Leigh (Australia)
album, alt country | indie rock
Odie wows with an album that serves up unexpected lyrical twists to the alt country / indie rock creative bucket. I heard the title track in advance, but “Already (On My Mind)” captures the depth of this offering and makes me happy. Listen to the album and tell me if you agree.
Love’s Company, Djanan Turan (England)
album, pop / psychedelic Anatolian folk
This London-based songwriter, singer, and producer braids together modern pop sensibilities with psychedelic Anatolian folk (derived from her Turkish roots). This polished primal collection touches upon relationship and social issues with seductive finesse. In the single “Crux” Djanan laments “For that claimed greater good | There is too much sacrifice.”
No Obligation, The Linda Lindas (California)
album, punk | power pop
Thanks to Steve Goldberg for the heads up on this new release by one of my favorite punk bands. These teens pack a whole lotta punch (they ALL sing on this album) that landed them opening gigs with Bikini Kill, Green Day, and The Rolling Stones. You don’t think teens care about the future? Think again! “Even though we’re not old enough to vote, we’re old enough to care,” they proclaimed on the daily show. It shows on this album.
“Too Stoned To Cry”, Margo Price (feat. Billy Strings)
single, country
Written by Andrew Combs, this super sad duet from Margo and Billy may make you want to reach out for the bottle, but you’ll probably be too stoned. Remember you can follow Margo on Substack, which I highly recommend. She truly is an open book.
“Guitar Lady”, Brittney Spencer (Maryland)
album, country
Brittney sang this feel-good song at Kamala Harris’ rally in North Carolina just before the election. She’s an advocate for Habitat for Humanity, The Women’s March, and CARE, and has shared the stage with Spencer has shared stages with Meghan Thee Stallion, Jason Isbell, The Highwomen, Willie Nelson, Reba, Bobby Weir, Lauren Hill, and Maren Morris.
“Find Your Voice”, Leslie Nuss (Indiana)
single, indie rock | pop
A songwriter, artist, and activist, Leslie puts her words where her heart is. In this simple call to action, “Find Your Voice” crescendos into a sweet chorus of cherubic vocals paired with a guitar solo.
“I Don't Tell My Friends”, Eva Westphal (New York)
single, purpose-driven pop
Remember how heightened youthful emotions and self-discovery overwhelmed you? You felt like you were going to burst but also that you couldn’t tell anyone (for many a fearful reason). That’s this song. As soon as I dry my eyes, I’m calling my children and parents and friends to tell them they can share anything with me without shame or fear.
There’s No Such Thing As Time, Parker Woodland (Texas)
album, indie rock
The album’s first single “Makeup” was featured here previously. Now, the full album is out with the trippy “Stranger” being the next music video. Who is Gen Z’s Cameron Crow? IDK, but whoever she is, any track on this album would pair nicely with an epic modern-day teen angst movie in a world gone wild.
“Never Too Late”, Mandy Mayhem (California)
single, Gen X rap
Produced by Keith Shocklee, founding member of The Bomb Squad and producer of Public Enemy, this is Mandy’s first single from her upcoming album. Warning: lyrics aren’t for the faint of heart. Find out why! Listen to our podcast chat.
Transatlantic Light, Lo Carmen (Australia)
album, alt country | indie rock
Sister Substacker and multi-faceted creative (singer/songwriter/podcaster/author/actress) released her 8th album in September. This collection hits home on a rainy Sunday morning while journaling… or drinking a beer on the back porch just as the sun disappears.
“Falling Awake”, Lauren Mendelsohn, (Pennsylvania)
single, folk pop
Lauren wrote this song based on a guitar riff that her brother came up with while she was in a perfectly happy relationship. If you like the soundtrack for The Twilight Saga soundtrack, this is right up your romantic, vampire-loving heart.
Merry & Bright: Wavemakers Holiday Concert and Market
Herizon Music was born in Austin, Texas, so our band of dreamers, rule breakers, and rockstars still love supporting local events that focus on women music makers. Like this fun concert and marketplace on December 12th at the 04 Center. The show will be live-streamed, so stay tuned for details on that.
The lineup features Wendy Colonna, Suzanna Choffel, Lurleen Ladd and Erin Ivey with a local all-star band rounding out the cheer. Swing by the Herizon Music table and say hello! Get details and tickets today…

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'll have to check some of these out (I've only heard one of them before). Here is something that just snagged my vote for song of the year. It is so new it isn't on streaming services yet; they just posted the MV to tease their new EP, which is about to drop. Band is Koiai, and the song is "Come See Me." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M87btwE1hZM. My mini-review: "A legitimate supergroup, despite two of the members still being teenagers. Their sound is a sizzling blend of jazz, funk and metal. This is from their second EP of 2024, with hopefully a lot more to come. Best new group I've heard in five years."
One In The Struggle
Written 1985 during Willie Nelson's Farm Aid projects
I am a farmer, I’m trying to grow some food
Locked in a system that don’t do me no good
They think I’m beneath them, like the dirt under my nails
I am a farmer, but my farm is up for sale
I am a worker making money for my boss
When times are good he profits, when they’re bad we take the loss
We’re treated like children: supervised all day
I’d quit in a minute, if I didn’t need the pay
And the bottom line is greed the
Bottom line is ignorance
the bottom line is fear, and the
Bottom line is power
And the bottom line is here and now
I have to realize
We’re all in this together
In the struggle to survive.
We are one in the fight
To take control of our lives.
We are one in the struggle,
We are one
I’m unemployed now
My job has taken flight
To some far country,
Where the workers have no rights
I’m deep in debt now
My insurance has expired
My wife is pregnant,
Some days I feel so tired
I am a refugee,
My country is at war
It’s the same old story,
The rich against the poor
And the rich get fatter on the
Lies the poor are fed
When I speak the truth,
They put a price upon my head
And the bottom line is greed...
We are one in the struggle,
We are one
I am a senior, living the golden years–
The pride of the drug firms, they’re playing on my fears–
And they’re mining my pockets to line their own with gold–
I am a senior, some days I feel so old
I am an Indian
I am an African
I am a woman
I am a homeless one
And the bottom line is greed, the
Bottom line is ignorance
the bottom line is fear, and the
Bottom line is power
And the bottom line is here and now
I have to realize
We’re all in this together
In the struggle to survive.
We are one in the fight
To take control of our lives
We are one in the struggle,
We are one
